Approaching the finish line, Mujinga Kambundji suddenly realizes how close she is to the best. She looks to the right, and they are there, close at hand: Marie-Josée Ta Lou, the fastest sprinter this year; Elaine Thompson, two-time Olympic champion; Dafne Schippers, the best 200m runner in the world. And when the Bernese sees this, she wants to reach the stars and crush something. Nevertheless, she runs the Swiss record, for the ninth time already at this distance. But the 11-second mark resisted their assaults

The one who retired

When Kambundji set the record for the first time on 100 meters four years ago, she has dropped to 11.33 seconds. Now it is three tenths of a second faster, and the end of development is certainly not reached. It affects not only sports but also people. Kambundji was a cheerful jet girl who, at 11.50 seconds on 100 meters, had just a good national level, when she decided in 2013 at the age of 21 to try as a professional. She moved to Germany at the time national coach Valerij Bauer and began, first of all, to approach the European summit. At the European Championships in Zurich, she thrilled the audience like a whirlwind of laughter, even if it was not enough for a medal.

Two years later, she had definitely made the connection. Valerij Bauer had shaped it to her standards, she had gained five pounds of muscle with a lot of strength, but she had also lost stamina. The 200m that she loved to run had become a secondary discipline. A year later, she worked successfully on Bauer, he adjusted his training a bit. But by the end of summer 2017, Kambundji realized that the compromises were not enough. She separated from Bauer

The athlete took an individual coach with the Dutchman Henk Kraaijenhof, but he was not really happy either. When she won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships over 60 meters, she was practically alone on the road. Then she joined the group of American coach Rana Reider, who coaches alongside other Schippers. But more than a common training camp did not exist so far. She mainly takes care of her youth coach Jacques Corday.

Away from the Electric Machine

Kambundji is currently not the product of a coach, but mostly what she considers to be good. The past years have been marked by an impressive maturation process, from the move to Germany to taking care of oneself, as well as the fact that the 26-year-old athlete again away from the Bauer engine to return to the gracious Sprinterin. was. She has lost three and a half pounds since she was away from the German coach, she said.

She became faster. Kambundji has arrived more than ever this season and she stopped after a competitive block when her colleagues went to La Chaux-de-Fonds for the weekend and signed the fastest times. She had already wondered briefly if she had missed the opportunity to run a very fast race, she said before the meeting. But these doubts are definitely eliminated. And colleagues took the form of La Chaux-de-Fonds: 42.29 – also record with the season.
