With World No. 8 Kevin Anderson, the Wimbledon quarter-finals are the first real test for defending champions Roger Federer. But almost everything speaks for the Swiss.
In four games, South African Kevin Anderson has never managed to put Federer in trouble. The 2.03-meter giant, however, believes it might be different this time around. Last year's US Open finalist is at Wimbledon for the first time in the quarterfinals and did not even know after his victory against Gael Monfils that his next opponent is Federer. "I usually only watch the next game, not the whole board," he said almost apologetically.
"It's the complete package," says the 32-year-old from Johannesburg. "But I think that with my strong service, I can hurt him, I play the best tennis of my career, and then I can be dangerous for anyone." Federer is aware of this danger. But his form is right. He never had to give up his service in the first four games. Since his defeat in the semifinal against Milos Raonic in 2016, Basler, 36, has won 32 sets in a row at Wimbledon.
Federer could play another factor in the boxes. The weather in London has changed a bit. Instead of more than 30 degrees of clouds and only about 25 degrees are expected. An advantage for the imposing service of Anderson. Anderson does not need to get used to the famous Center Court, where he played Andy Murray in a knockout encounter four years ago. The match was scheduled for the first time by Federer on track 1 this year (14:00 Swiss time).
Federer will also face tough penalties in a possible semifinal, his 13th on Church Road. In the other quarter-final of his half-table, Raonic and John Isner are probably the two biggest supporters of the day
In the semifinals, Rafael Nadal, alone in addition to Federer, also arrives at the first endurance test. He met Juan Martin Del Potro, who had to rest against Gilles Simon but made his second quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon on Monday. The winner will face Novak Djokovic or Kei Nishikori in the semifinals.
