Audi wins the team title in Formula E for the first time

Motorsport-Magazin.com – new champion says goodbye with victory: Jean-Eric Vergne wins the last race of the 2017/18 Formula E season in New York. The Techeetah driver dominated the race in front of Audi duo Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt.

Thus, the first German manufacturer in Formula E scored four of the six possible podiums in New York. Di Grassi won Saturday's race ahead of team-mate Abt.

Due to the strong performance, Audi wins the team championship at the last moment. This is the first title of champion of the troupe, having always been victorious over the past three years.

Winning the victory thanks to lightning

Vergne won Sunday's race in third position thanks to an absolute dream start. Already in the first corner, the French took the lead of the poleman Sebastien Buemi the day France won the final of the World Cup.

Vergne was under the watchful eye of a possible early start, but remained unpunished. Instead, his teammate Andre Lotterer was penalized for giving up too early. That cost the second place to the Germans, he finished ninth. P8 would have been enough for Techeetah to win the team title.

Di Grassi is vice-champion

The penalty benefitted di Grassi and Abt, who made duels with Buemi for the final podium in the race. The Kemptener finally retained their advantage and got their fourth podium of the season. Di Grassi led a tight duel with Vergne until the end – less than a second behind at the finish.

Di Grassi even took the vice-championship behind Vergne and ahead of Sam Bird, who finished third overall for a long time. Di Grassi has scored five second places and two wins in the last seven races of the season. "An incredible race," said the Brazilian. "And we won the team championship, so we did not expect it, it's a miracle we achieved after being so far into the season."

Points: Sébastien Buemi narrowly missed the podium after finishing third Saturday. Felix Rosenqvist (Mahindra) finished the season in fifth place after many problems. Jaguar duo Mitch Evans and Nelson Piquet took positions six and seven. Nick Heidfeld (Mahindra), Andre Lotterer (Techeetah) and Sam Bird (Virgin) complete the top 10.

Here is how the Sunday Race in New York took place

The weather: Two hours before the start of the race at 15:00 local time, we did not know if the race would proceed as planned. Due to a storm warning, the spectator stands had to be evacuated in the meantime. Then, Formula E finally gave the green light for the punctual departure of the race. If the 3rd practice session and qualifying were still in wet conditions, she remained dry running at 26 degrees outside temperature. Never in the history of Formula E has there been racing under wet conditions.

Starting grid: Sébastien Buemi started from pole position for the second time this weekend – a good performance by the Renault driver in his New York debut after missing the races of 2017 Behind them are the two Techeetahs of André Lotterer and the new master Jean-Eric Vergne. The title challengers of the Audi team, Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi, started from positions four and five.

The launch: Absolute quick start by Jean-Eric Vergne! The champion took third place outside his former teammate Andre Lotterer and conceded in the first corner of the pole poser Sebastien Buemi. But: Vergne and Lotterer were due to a possible early departure under observation of the race director. On lap 11, Lotterer was placed in second place with a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Vergne was free from all punishment. Daniel Abt is the loser of the starting phase. He went from fourth to sixth behind Nelson Piquet.

The Fanboost: Like this Saturday, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniel Abt and Sebastien Buemi got the most votes during the fanboost vote and could be pleased with an additional boost of 100 kJ in the second half of the race. Buemi then used his fanboost on the 27th lap to overtake Abt for third place.

The Pits stop: Daniel Abt takes the pit lane for the car swap on lap 22 in third place. He was followed by Felix Rosenqvist, Mitch Evans, Nick Heidfeld and Sam Bird. The advance around Jean-Eric Vergne, Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi made his pit stop a lap later. Abt managed to take third place behind Vergne and di Grassi and ahead of Buemi.

Incidents: Antonio Felix Da Costa received a 10-second penalty for the tripartite accident in the departure phase. In addition, the pilot Andretti received three penalty points.

Chess: Mortara replacement Tom Dillmann had to give up in the start phase due to electrical problems. The French surprised surprisingly fourth place Saturday for Venturi on the debut of team leader Susie Wolff.

Jose Maria Lopez drove too hard on a notch in the 6th lap, damaging her suspension. The Dragon pilot failed for the second time and provided a complete yellow phase. Meanwhile, there was another accident: Antonio Felix Da Costa (Andretti) and Luca Filippi (NIO) entered the compound. The former DTM driver dismissed the NIO car, catching Jerome D'Ambrosio (Dragon). It was also for the second Dragon pilot early the end of the job.

Maro Engel was in the middle of the race after work. Apparently, the Venturi pilot had to face technical problems for which the team found no solution even after two visits to the pit lane. So, both Venturi race cars have not seen the checkered flag. !
