Fresenius Medical Care, a dialysis specialist, has been successful in the field of regenerative medicine for chronic kidney disease.

As reported by the DAX group, Unicyte's subsidiary demonstrated in a preclinical model that its own patented system of extracellular nano-vesicles (nEVs) – derived from stem cells that support the transport of messengers between cells – can restore kidney function in chronic kidney failure.

These particles would have prevented the healing of renal tissue during the treatment of mice with rapidly evolving kidney disease. The connective tissue healing and damage to the tubular cells of the kidney have been significantly reduced. Kidney function could be completely restored.

According to the FMC, the results of the new study correspond to previous findings of a preclinical model of slowly progressive renal disease.

"Unicyte will further explore the potential of nEVs for the treatment of patients with renal failure who are not yet dependent on dialysis," said Olaf Schermeier, general manager of Fresenius Medical Care Research and Development.
