In 2017, the Swiss population eliminated just over 129,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment destined for disposal. Although consumers overall bring back more equipment, the overall weight has decreased slightly compared to the previous year.
The reason is the continuing trend of moving from flat screen tubes.
In Switzerland, waste electrical and electronic equipment can be returned free of charge for recycling. This is thanks to the advanced recycling contribution (VRB) that is incurred when buying a new product. Electronic recycling is organized and managed by both Swico Recycling and SENS eRecycling recovery systems. In 2017, a total of 129,218 tonnes of e-waste was generated (previous year: 137,808). This corresponds to 15 kg per inhabitant. In terms of total weight, 62% fall on household appliances and light bulbs (SENS eRecycling), 38% on old computers, telecommunications and consumer electronics (Swico Recycling)
ICT products have also continued in 2017. A total of 48,525 tonnes of computer hardware, consumer electronics and telecommunications were returned (previous year: 52,362 tonnes). As a result, unit volumes continued to increase, but the total weight of volumes withdrawn by Swico Recycling decreased by about 7.3%. The main driver remains the change in technology in televisions, which represent a large part of the tonnages Swico: while the old kinescope devices have been brought back, today there are flat screens increasingly lighter. The number of returned CRT-PC monitors dropped by 26% and that of CRT TVs by 24%.
More and more participants
It's not just consumers who are turning off their older computers or TVs more and more. The Swico Recycling Voluntary Takeover System is also very popular among manufacturers and importers of ICT, consumer electronics and office automation. The number of convention signatories, ie companies participating in the system and making an early contribution to the recycling of their devices, increased by 42 new partners to 568 companies last year. (+ 8%). It is gratifying that in Switzerland, there are no pigeons in the field of ICT and consumer electronics that jeopardize solidarity.
