Many problems benefit Daimler

In September, Daimler started the software upgrade. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) had previously ordered a recall of about 700,000 diesel Daimler due to an illegal shutdown device for exhaust gas treatment.

In the third quarter, the group's profit in the current business has seen a break-off after provisional figures to reach 2.49 billion euros – after nearly 3.41 billion euros to the same period of last year. Previously, Daimler had calculated a "slight" decline. In the Mercedes-Benz car sector alone, earnings before interest and taxes rose from 2.1 billion euros to 1.37 billion euros. The brand has struggled for months with a drop in sales. This is due to delays in certification according to the new WLTP exhaust gas test procedure, model change and stopping the delivery of diesel vehicles.

In addition, as a precautionary measure, Daimler wishes to put in place a provision on the refrigerant dispute that the European Court of Justice ruled at the beginning of October. The height did not name the group. In 2013, Daimler had used R-134a refrigerant, banned by EU legislation, in vehicles. The Group justified this by stating that the planned and more environmentally friendly R-1234yf chemical posed a safety risk because highly toxic hydrogen fluoride could be produced in case of ignition. . More than 133,000 vehicles have been affected and it may be necessary to re-equip them. For the full year of 2018, Daimler expects the EBIT of Mercedes-Benz cars to be "significantly lower than the level of the previous year".

Concerns and buses also raise concerns. The van division is expecting a loss of 93 million euros in the third quarter, after a profit of 214 million euros in the same period last year. Again, there were problems with the diesel engines. The Bus business unit forecasts a slight decrease in EBIT to 30 million euros. According to the company, business in Argentina and Turkey weaken here. Only the truck division is in full swing: there was in the third quarter, according to preliminary figures, an increase of 614 million euros to 850 million euros.

The automaker had announced in the middle of the year to reposition itself. The same goes for cars and vans from 2020 until the Mercedes-Benz AG. At Daimler Truck AG, truck and bus activities are grouped together. The financial services division as the third, legally independent, pillar should also be renamed Daimler Mobility AG in 2019. The company had promised its employees in Germany to keep their jobs until the end of 2029 at least. At the end of September, Managing Director Dieter Zetsche announced that he will hand over to Ola Källenius, Development Manager, in May 2019.

The Daimler action retreated after the profit warning Friday night of about 3%. Next Thursday, Daimler wants to publish the latest quarterly figures. / Ols / axa / DP / fba
