Corning introduced Gorilla Glass 6, a new version of its special glass designed to better protect smartphones from falling. Already in the coming months, the first models with Gorilla Glass 6 are likely to come on the market – perhaps already the 2018th iPhone
Gorilla Glass 6 offers "unprecedented protection against multiple drops" and better protection against falls in a press release from the American manufacturer Corning. The new version is the most durable glass up to now, developed with the aim of challenging more than just a fall. With each smartphone user dropping their device on the ground seven times a year on average, multiple fall protection is an important criterion that Corning wanted to improve.
Gorilla Glass 6 twice as resilient as its predecessor
With Gorilla Glass 6 survive 15 drops on hard ground – up to twice as much as Gorilla Glass 5, which Corning has been offering to its partners since 2016. Other materials, such as soda-lime glass or aluminosilicates, would not even survive the first fall, says Corning. The superior resilience has been developed especially in the context of smartphones with a complete glass design, such as the iPhone X, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. Gorilla Glass 6 is not only particularly scratch resistant, but also enables efficient wireless charging.
The first smartphones with Gorilla Glass 6 could be on the market in the months to come. The starting signal could be the new brand iPhones 2018, which will be introduced in the fall of Apple – a long-time partner of Corning.
