The American actor Tab Hunter, who celebrated his greatest hits in the 1950s, is dead.

As Hunter's longtime partner, producer Allan Glaser, announced the American newspaper "Variety", the actor died Sunday in Santa Barbara, California, as a result of a clot of blood. He was 86 years old.

Stars like Elton John, Zachary Quinto, William Shatner and Bo Derek mourned the former idol, who became a gay icon after his release.

Elton John describes Hunter on Twitter as "the most handsome and the most special man". It was an honor to know him, wrote the actor Quinto on Instagram for a photo of the young blonde star. He praised Hunter as a "pioneer of self-acceptance".

In her early twenties, well-trained beauty played her first lead role in the movie "Island of Promise" (1952). His good looks quickly turned him into a teen idol.

With John Wayne, he directed the war drama "The Sea Fox", with Sophia Loren the comedy "Something about Woman". Lana Turner, Debbie Reynolds and Natalie Wood were among her co-stars.
