Audi renews the Q3. Thanks to the modular construction kit, the compact SUV has more space than its predecessor and is better networked.

G ut Audi presents the second generation of the compact SUV series on the market seven years after the introduction of Q3. In the process, the citizens of Ingolstadt, who were scolded for their rather cautious model changes in recent years, are surprised by a sharp break: the Ingolstadt-based company has missed a radically new and more modern design for the new compact Q; at the same time, it has grown in scale and, less surprisingly, has brought some innovations.

When a successor is introduced, the designers are happy to point out the predecessor's quotes in the new sheet metal edition. But Matthias Fink, head of exterior design, focuses on new highlights. The new Q3 is a newcomer who must optically beat the "bridge between Q2 and Q5". Among other things, therefore, compared to its predecessor, the face has wandered a "half-floor". In addition, the newcomer on the VW Group MQB SUV platform has risen from four inches to 4.49 meters, while the wheelbase increases from eight inches to 2.68 meters. In the opinion of Jochen Kapler, product manager Q3, the new edition has also become a family car designed to win new customers.

The spacious interior of the five-door car offers potential and development potential for many people. In the back seat, adults will find more than enough space for the legs. If the rear seat backrest is highlighted – there is unfortunately no remote unlocking – the luggage compartment increases from 530 to 675 liters, depending on the position of the rear seat, to 1525 liters – 160 liters more than before. Also in terms of variability, the Q3 is suitable as an alternative van. The rear seat is adjustable in length and the 40:20:40 split backrest is adjustable in seven tilt steps. The trunk lid, which can be opened electrically and on foot, facilitates loading and allows storing the loading floor, which can be locked in three heights, otherwise the rear shelf can be stowed

Above, Q3 has a numerical maximum. The dashboard is a future display, which offers in the base of 10.25 inches and at an additional cost in the screen size of 12.3 inches. In addition to driving information, the dashboard can also display music titles or the navigation map as a virtual cockpit. If the supplement MMI Radio Plus ordered, located in the center console, another 8.8-inch-diameter screen. This touch screen can reach 10.1 inches when Navigation Plus is ordered. Incidentally, the previous central console reset knob has become obsolete at Audi because it will depend on touch control technology in the future. There are also buttons on the steering wheel or the possibility of voice control. Other benefits include an inductive charging cradle for a smartphone or a LED mood light that can be ordered in 30 colors.

The high-end infotainment system includes Audi Affiliate, which can also be used to manage a range of online services. This includes information on real-time traffic or the display of petrol stations and car parks near the vehicle as well as their availability and current prices. In addition, smartphones can be integrated and used in many ways in interaction with the vehicle. The MyAudi app allows, among other things, to locate, lock and unlock the vehicle remotely or activate the auxiliary heating system.

The Q3 is also up to date with support systems. Anti-collision devices and lane departure warning systems are always included as standard. As an option, there is the Adaptive Driver Assistant, which can relieve the driver of braking, acceleration and track tracking over long distances.

Audi will introduce three gasoline engines and a diesel engine to market launch. The basic unit is the four-cylinder 1.5-liter 110 kW / 150 hp with cylinder deactivation. The 40 TFSI with two liters and 140 kW / 190 hp and the 45 TFSI with 169 kW / 230 hp are rated above this 35 TFSI. While the optional front-wheel drive gasoline engine combined with the manual or dual-clutch transmission, combine the strongest models still with four-wheel drive and auto-transmission. All driving options are available for 35 TDI base diesel buyers (110 kW / 150 hp) followed by a more powerful version with 140 kW / 190 hp. Prices do not yet reveal Audi, but they must move to the level of its predecessor, which was available from 30,000 euros.
