If there is a place where tradition and etiquette are still important today, then the All England Lawn tennis club at Wimbledon. The tournament on Church Road is currently in the 141st edition. The dress code for the players is, of course, particularly eye-catching.
Wimbledon insists on a pure white dress, including shoes. A tradition that dates back to the 19th century and sometimes more, sometimes less interpreted. At least 90% of the outfit should be white. Color bands are only allowed up to a width of one centimeter
The outfit is checked before each party. Even an eight-time champion like Roger Federer, 36, must keep his underwear before he can go to Center Court
"A touch of color would be nice."
Roger, of course, respects that. He would also like a relaxation. "It's fun to be different here, but it would be nice to add a splash of color, to be honest," he says.
He understands that traditions are exactly what they are. Wimbledon's current president, Phil Brook, is an advocate of the stricter dress codes of the '50s and' 60s.
Federer notes that it was already different. "Borg and McEnroe were in a red outfit, I'm not saying it should happen again, but maybe it would be nice if we mixed up a bit," he says.
More painting at Wimbledon would give manufacturers more creativity. "It also creates a challenge for brands, how they can shape white differently," says Federer, who is playing with Uniqlo again.
Federer was also reprimanded
Anyone who does not respect the rules will be banned or warned. Federer also had this experience in 2013, when he was reprimanded for changing his orange soles and had to change shoes
Every year, Wimbledon's superiors discover too much color among the stars. Venus Williams had to change bra during a rain shower in 2017 because the pink straps could be seen on her shoulders.
Also for the audience there is a dress code – although somewhat relaxed. In general, they should appear "smart casual". Only in certain areas, jeans or sports shoes are prohibited, where the jacket and the tie are required.
