July 30, 2018 –
Samsung is developing an unbreakable and flexible screen that has recently been certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) test institute. Even higher falls should survive the display intact.

The flexible screen for Samsung's OLED smartphone has successfully passed the testing institute's Underwriters Laboratories (UL) test, as Samsung's announcement in a statement. The screen is based on OLED technology with an unbreakable substrate and dispenses with real glass, which, according to the manufacturer, would often be the weak point in case of massive loads.

The test that the display has undergone by UL is a development for US military standards and equipment tests for accidents, among other things. Thus, the screen should have survived 26 consecutive falls of about 1.2 meters unscathed. In other tests, an extended fall height of 1.8 meters could not damage the equipment. In addition, the screen has been exposed to temperature fluctuations between -32 and 71 degrees Celsius without being damaged.

"The reinforced plastic surface is particularly suitable for portable electronic devices, not only for its unbreakable properties, but also for its lightness, permeability and hardness, very similar to glass," commented Samsung's Hojung Kim. In which product the screen will find the application is not yet clear, but the provided image shows only a relatively large bending radius, which would not be enough for a foldable device.
