Good phone and data connections at the station and on the train are essential for customers. That's why SBB, together with mobile network operators, is investing in the improvement of the mobile network for railways, tunnels and trains.
For some years now, SBB has equipped its trains with 3G / 4G signal amplifiers. With regard to the new 5G mobile radio standard, SBB will also be using laser perforated windows in the future. Based on the good coverage of the mobile network, SBB will conduct a technology test for free internet in the train in 2019. The proposed solution provides customers with a faster and smoother Internet connection with more bandwidth. as the wireless LAN in the train.
As part of its mobile telephony strategy, SBB is continuously improving telephone and data links in stations and on trains. In 2013, the first train stations were equipped with free Wi-Fi, which is available in 80 stations. In concert with mobile phone service providers, investments have been made for several years to improve mobile phone coverage of railways, with coverage now at 97%.
The good quality of the connection has already been confirmed several times by the independent transnational comparison test "Connect". The existing network gaps are known. The Simplon and Ceneri base tunnels are therefore equipped with 4G. From 2022, all Swiss tunnels will have 4G. In conjunction with mobile operators, 4G supply along the north-south axis and in the border regions will be further improved by 2020. These measures will bring the supply of roads to 99%.
In the long-distance and regional transport sector, SBB installed 4G signal amplifiers and some 140,000 in more than 1,300 cars and 150 multiple units, in collaboration with mobile operators. In long-distance traffic, SBBs will equip around 94% of signal amplifier trains by 2020 and around 80% of regional traffic. For new purchases and upgrades of trains, laser perforated windows are installed, which allow a higher mobile phone transmission.
New free Internet in Swiss trains
Currently, customers can not browse the Internet for free on SBB trains. That should change: in 2019, SBB will carry out a technological test under the name CFF FreeSurf to benefit from a free internet connection in the train (see below). The free Internet is based on good mobile phone coverage with 3G / 4G in Switzerland and offers customers a smoother and smoother Internet connection with more bandwidth than WLAN: a wireless local area network (WLAN) between trains is a bottleneck because the signals are grouped and transferred to a few connections from the train to the mobile network.
The new solution also makes it possible to quickly use the future 5G in trains. The technology test takes place on Interconnected Toggle Train (ICN), which operates on IC 5 and IC 51 IC lines. Sunrise and Salt customers can participate in the test. SBB is in discussion with other mobile service providers, including Swisscom. For customers without a SIM card, for example tourists, a mobile point of access solution will be tested as part of the test. The aim is to offer free Internet in all SBB long distance trains from 2020.
Free Wi-Fi in international trains at end of 2019
Unlike good 3G / 4G / (5G) mobile phone coverage in Switzerland, trains abroad are often operated on routes to underserved areas. Here, the use of WLAN makes sense: a wireless router brings together existing mobile networks from different providers. As a result, the Internet connection is improved and the coverage gaps of the different mobile networks can be compensated. In this context, SBB equips WLAN with its international trains operated in Switzerland and neighboring countries. This will be available end of 2019 for customers in the first compositions of SBB.
