In the United States, as part of a corruption scandal, there are at least two proceedings concerning the Anglo-Swiss commodity group Glencore . Shareholders accuse the company of making false and misleading statements. This is clear from the two lawsuits filed Monday in Newark, New Jersey and Wednesday in New York. Glencore initially failed to respond to requests Wednesday night.
US authorities investigate corruption in Glencore's mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela and Nigeria. This should have been suspicious payments. US laws also criminalize bribes abroad.
Glencore had agreed to work with the United States Department of Justice. As a result, the company based in Baar, Switzerland has set up a body to respond to allegations. The committee is chaired by Chairman Tony Hayward. The Glencore action closed Wednesday night with a decline of nearly 5%. (sda)
