Bayreuth Shortly before the start of the festival, French tenor Roberto Alagna announces his performance in Bayreuth. He should have sung the role of "Lohengrin". The singer's reason: He could not repeat the role enough.
About three and a half weeks before the opening, the Bayreuth Festival will be there without Lohengrin. Roberto Alagna (55), who was to sing the title role of the eponymous opera house Richard Wagner to kick off the festival on July 25, has canceled, said a festival speaker. The Alaga agency justified this move by saying that the singer was overloaded. He could not study the game enough. The Bayreuth festival officials are now actively looking for a new singer. At the end of May, the Frenchman said in an interview with the magazine "Oper!" That he had long considered taking over. He wondered why Bayreuth just wanted to hire him, since he was not a Wagner tenor. "I think they really wanted to have another guy named Lohengrin."
Alagna is specialized in French and Italian. In the interview he saw the language as the biggest challenge for his debut at Bayreuth: "My German must be good, that's why I constantly memorize the lyrics."
The new production "Lohengrin" is directed by director Yuval Sharon and conductor Christian Thielemann, The scenography comes from the famous artist couple Neo Rauch and Rosa Loy
Who could defend Alagna? In recent years, Klaus Florian Vogt has fascinated Hans Neuenfels as a gentle and lyrical swan knight. Vogt is again on the green hill this year – but as Stolzing in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". Or does Jonas Kaufmann return to Bayreuth, where he gave concerts in 2010 under the title Lohengrin? Kaufmann's program is however close in the coming weeks – "Parsifal" at the Munich Opera Festival, several concerts are on hold.
Short-term shifts in support roles are not new to Bayreuth. In 2016, conductor Andris Nelsons said goodbye to Bayreuth, Hartmut Haenchen jumped in. And the year before, Anja Kampe had returned the Isolde game at the end of June, Evelyn Herlitzius took over. However, artists have never made public their motives before.
