The most popular programming languages on Github since 2014. Graphics: Github
Github reports in this year's Octoverse report, even after Microsoft's acquisition of a growing dependency. Meanwhile, according to Github data, about 31 million developers registered on the platform, eight million joined this year alone. The platform now covers about 96 million repositories, 40% more than last year.
In 2017, Switzerland ranked 18th among the countries with the largest number of contributors, but has now been dropped from the top 20 by South Korea, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Since 2015, the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom and Germany remain at the top.
In one category however, local developers remain in second place in the world: in public deposits, the Swiss were the "most talkative" and left the second largest number of comments per capita after the Czechs.
Most contributions to open source projects come from Microsoft employees: 7700
The developers of Github's owner are currently active on the platform. Then come Google with 5500 contributors and Red Hat with 3300. Then comes with UC Berkeley already the first university.
Redmond also hosts two of the top five open source projects: Microsoft Visual Studio Code and Microsoft Azure Documentation, fifth place, reaching nearly 17,000 contributors. The second and third places revive React Native (mobile application development framework) and Tensorflow (machine learning framework).
The most popular programming languages have changed very little. The command: Javascript in the first place, followed by Java, Python, PHP, C ++, C #, TypeScript, Shell, C, Ruby. The latter continues its descent with a loss of space, C even loses two places while Typescript has two places. It should be noted that 260% more Github users have used the Kotlin programming language this year compared to the previous year. HCL improved by a factor of 2.2.
