His heart is broken. "My only son no longer lives," says Agnes Wetzel (76), mother of Peter Wetzel († 51), who died Thursday in all of Switzerland as Clown Spidi. Only a few days ago she had another coffee with him in Lucerne. "He looked pretty satisfied, he even laughed in between." From a shaking voice, she adds, "And now he's just gone."
Peter was already very sensitive when he was little, remembers Agnes Wetzel, who like his son is short-lived. He has often been mocked by other children because of his size. "Everyone can not handle that as well." If she had done that, she would never have been angry. "That's how people are!" But Peter would have made his teasing confused. It shaped his life.
During his 24 years at Circus Knie, his son was happy most of the time, says Agnes Wetzel. "He had a good job there.He was allowed to give pleasure to other people, he loved him."
Spidi complained of leg pain and hips
However, a year ago he had a first major crisis. "Peter was still locked up, he also complained of leg and hip pain," says Agnes Wetzel. "He should have had surgery, but he did not want to." On the other hand, he also had positive moments. "But who knows exactly what's going on behind a clown mask in a person?"
In recent months, Peter has rarely been on the phone. He had retired more and more. "But I never expected it to end so badly," said Agnes Wetzel and sighs. "I would do anything to see my son smile happily one more time."
In mid-August, Circus Knie organizes a public funeral service for Spidi on the Allmend Bernese. "I hope a lot of people will come and remember my boys," says the mother. "It would certainly make him very happy."
