Market value does not tell you everything about the chances of success of a football team. And yet, it is obvious and emphasized by studies: The total value of a team correlates, in the long run, always with the final ranking of the club in the league. Therefore, watching the data on the football platform "Transfermarkt.com" will not hurt before the start of the season – even if the numbers are mostly estimates. The latest figures give hope for a rising level in Swiss football. All players in the Super League resumed in mid-July 2017 for 195.3 million euros, compared with about 290 million a year later. Where does this big jump come from?
On the one hand, it is the overheated football market, which generally increases the market value each year. On the other hand, and that is the main reason with the new Swiss champion. The Young Boys have risen strongly and FC Basel has exceeded market values in summer (see chart).
Basel also increases – but much less than the Bernese
The big step of 26 to 76 million euros It is not expensive new entrants – the market values of players leaving Bern are about the same size as newcomers. On the contrary, virtually all Young Boys players have recently gained more value. Ghanaian central defender Kasim Nuhu rose from one million to 8.5 million last season. Striker Jean-Pierre Nsame from 1.5 to 4.5, Kevin Mbabu even from 1.5 to 9.5 million. The example of Young Boys shows what a good season can do financially and what added value a good coach can bring. FC Basel can not compete with that. Although the balance of the market value of the last twelve months is also positive: the increases in value of Eder Balanta or top scorer Albian Ajeti contributed to it. But the step up is much smaller than the Young Boys. In addition, Basel has lost value in transfers during the summer holidays. The departures of Mohamed Elyounoussi, Tomas Vaclik and Michael Lang have not been fully offset by the additions of Silvan Widmer and Aldo Kalulu.
The FCL team wins 8 million euros more
The other teams of the Super League have been able to develop, mainly thanks to the appreciation of previous players. The same goes for FC Lucerne, where the value of the team has risen in one year from 12.9 to 20.9 million euros according to Transfermarkt.com. Midfielder Idriz Voca (21) jumped from 100,000 to 1.25 million. Defenders Stefan Knezevic (21) and Marvin Schulz (23) made similar progress: their market value went from 400,000 to 1.5 million euros. The most valuable player of the FCL team remains according to the "transfer market" the Australian striker Tomi Juric (26) with a market value of 2 million euros (July 2017: 1, 25 million). However, its trend is down: in April, it was still estimated at 2.5 million. Goalkeeper David Zibung and defenseman Christian Schwegler are the only FCL players whose market value has fallen. However, this may have less to do with their achievements than their age: the two are now 34 years old.
