Swiss vegetable growers harvested about 780 tonnes of asparagus this year. This was slightly less than the previous year, but about five percent higher than the average of the last five years.

According to the Agricultural Information Service (LID), the white asparagus has even registered a record 460 tons according to the Central Office of Vegetables. In the case of green asparagus, the harvest of 320 tonnes was about ten percent lower than in the previous year.

According to LID, Florian Sandrini was pleased with the asparagus season as a representative of the asparagus market consortium. After the low temperatures of February and March, the asparagus with the warmer weather had literally exploded.

Large quantities had arrived at the right time when consumers' appetite for asparagus was great. There was no collapse in prices in Germany, where sales of large-scale crops had increased.

Swiss vegetable growers have significantly increased their production of asparagus in recent years. The area has more than doubled since last year with 390 hectares last year

Nevertheless, domestic production only covers about seven percent of demand. Of the 11,000 tonnes sold last year, only 800 tonnes came from local fields. The annual per capita consumption is 1.4 kilograms
