Dutch director Paul Verhoeven will start filming his latest film in Italy one day after his 80th birthday.
The film "Benedetta" on the life of a lesbian nun in the Renaissance is a Dutch-French coproduction, said film producer Topkapi Films in Amsterdam.
Verhoeven, which became famous worldwide with Hollywood films "Robocop" and "Basic Instinct", turns 80 on Wednesday. Last year, his feature film "Elle" won several awards from Isabelle Huppert.
In "Benedetta", the Belgians Virginie Efira and Daphné Patakia play the leading roles. They also include British Charlotte Rampling and Frenchman Lambert Wilson. The film is based on a novel by the American historian Judith C. Brown on the life of the lesbian nun Benedetta Carlini
