Only in June, 73 people in Switzerland were infected with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), as evidenced by figures released Monday by the BAG. On Monday, the press agency nda reported that at Brittnau AG in early July, a woman died because of a tick bite. This turned out to be wrong. On Sunday, the sda withdrew this message. In contrast, the "Blick" reported in late June a 73-year-old hunter from Gränichen, who died as a result of a tick bite.
Ticks that suck blood seem to be very active at the beginning of this year. In previous years, far fewer people were infected with the virus until the end of June. According to the BAG Bulletin, between 46 and 109 cases were recorded during the same period since 2000.
The Aarau Cantonal Hospital treated more paralyzed patients this year than the year previous, according to Tele M1. "We wait about twice," says Christoph Fux, Chief Infectiology Physician. The number of patients at the Baden Cantonal Hospital has also increased significantly. "We have 20% more patients with tick bites and we have the same number of cases as last year," says Markus Schwendinger, head of the emergency center.
This year, many more people have seen a doctor for tick bites or Lyme disease. According to an extrapolation made by the BAG, there were approximately 21,300 physician visits for tick bites and 6900 for cases of acute borreliosis at the end of June.
