The 2018 Blue Balls are history. We have heard many good concerts and beat the nights around our ears. Once again, the festival has remained true to its line.
That's all. With the Hurts concert at Lucerne Hall, the 2018 Blue Balls ended on Saturday. Around the lake basin and at the hotel Schweizerhof, the night lasted a little longer. What is left of this problem? Many good concerts (like Züri West, Alanis Morissette and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), some disappointments (like Tom Odell) and of course the heat.
The best time attracted many people to the festival – most of them in front of the pavilion, the "Schweizerhof" and the scenes of the KKL. Again the Blue Balls have offered a rich program, especially on the small scenes there are still discoveries quite possible – we speak of Xam Volo for the best memory.
Large selection of steps for spectators
Official The numbers announce the festival only today. Where these usually only have a conditional meaning: At the lake basin level, it would have taken about 100,000 visitors again, about the occupation figures for the KKL concerts , silent to the experience of the Blue Balls. Our own observations show that there has been a very wide range of moderately visited concerts (such as Anna Ternheim and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) to sold-out concerts (Alanis Morissette and Jessie J.).
It is perhaps for this reason that another number of interesting people have spoken of this summer festival: 1.3 million francs. That should have been Eminem's salary at the Open Air Frauenfeld. This number shows pretty impressive where the spiral of climbing on the festival market has already turned. This 1.3 million francs should – which is just a cheeky estimate – match the budget of the entire Blue Ball. The Open Air Frauenfeld, now the largest player in the Swiss market, is paying 90 minutes of music on a stage identical to the Blue Balls for nine days on several stages.
Of course: Eminem would make about five shoe sizes too big for Lucerne (making a profitable KKL gig, costing a ticket of around 800 francs), but the trend can be felt on the Swiss festival market during For a while, more and more festivals are pursuing medium-sized stars (the biggest are not even financially viable) and are outdoing themselves.
This year, the festival 's engine seems to have flinched for the first time: a lot of open airs, including the big ones, Gurten and St. Gallen, were not out of stock. The public seems to have had enough of constant price increases and very similar alignments
Not filled, but deliberately programmed
It is not unlikely that there is a market fit in a near to come up. This will be difficult especially for all those festivals that do not have their own line and identity. This is reassuring from Lucerne's point of view: The Blue Balls has its own line and identity. For several years now, the festival (certainly also for monetary reasons) is no longer based on big names, but on newcomers (supplemented by more famous artists). In fact, the musical claim really counts for something – we actually only experience it on small scenes, which are not just filled but programmed in a targeted way.
However, neither the director of the festival nor Lucerne can support it. We were a little shocked when we counted the festival pins sold on a walk along the wharf: there were only a few. You must be careful, of course, the Blue Balls are not.
