SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking near his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight, officials said.

Jorge Jimenez, 51, was in a car with four other people near Thompson Road in Syracuse when their vehicle crashed into a guardrail for unknown reasons, authorities said.

"The occupants then left the vehicle and started walking on the highway in the immediate vicinity of this vehicle," said Syracuse police in a press release dated 21:51. "An oncoming vehicle noticed the car down and tried to avoid the vehicle, which was in the middle of the road."

The driver of the second vehicle, Boeheim, 74, of Fayetteville, hit Jimenez while he was standing on the side of the road, police said.

"The field sobriety tests and self-sensors for both drivers gave negative results with respect to any sign of impairment," police said. "The reconstruction of the scene will be done and speeds can not be determined yet.

"No uniformed traffic ticket has been issued yet."

Boeheim's blood alcohol registered a .00, confirmed Onondaga County Attorney William Fitzpatrick.
