Legendary Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for coronavirus.
Boeheim, 75 years old broke the news on Twitter, writing that the positive test was part of the team’s routine COVID-19 protocols, as he, his players and staff are tested several times a week.
“Following our most recent tests, I was informed that I had tested positive for COVID-19,” he said in a statement. “I immediately started my period of isolation at home. I am not experiencing any symptoms at this time and will continue to closely monitor my health as advised by medical staff. Thanks for the good wishes. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch with my team.
Another member of the program has also tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a statement from Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack.
“As such, we have made the decision to suspend all basketball related activities,” said Wildhack. “We follow all CDC guidelines and ACC protocols, and are working closely with the Onondaga County Health Department, to mitigate transmission of the virus. All members of the basketball program will be tested again, several times, over the next week. “
Syracuse, which is slated to open the season Nov. 27 against Bryant, will have to suspend all basketball activities for 14 days. This puts their first game played as planned in serious doubt, although no official decision has been made. Boeheim, who has coached Orange for 43 years, will need to remain in isolation for at least 10 days from testing positive and at least one day after he begins to recover, according to ACC protocols.
