Ministry of Justice staff told T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp. that it was unlikely that their proposed merger would be approved as it is currently structured, according to people familiar with the case, questioning the fate of the 26 billion deal of dollars.

The third and fourth carriers by subscribers in the United States face challenges on many fronts, but the most immediate hurdle comes from the antitrust division of the Department of Justice, which examines whether the agreement represents an unacceptable threat to competition.
