Author Ta-Nehisi Coates has been drafted to write a new Superman movie for DC Films and Warner Bros., with JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot also on board to produce.
While the project is at the start of its development, Variety reports that Coates’ movie Superman – as the next The batman – would be more of a reboot of the Man of Steel franchise than a continuation of the current Superman storyline.
“To be invited to the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said in a statement. “I look forward to adding significantly to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythical hero.”
Abrams added in a statement, “There is a powerful and moving new Superman story to tell. We couldn’t be more excited to work with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring this story to the big screen, and we are more than grateful to the team at Warner Bros. for this opportunity.
The winner of the National Book Award for Between the world and me, Coates is well acquainted with the comic book world, writing a Black Panther series that started in 2016, as well as a 25-issue screenplay for Captain America in 2018.
Hollywood journalist speculates that Coates’ storyline could be linked to a Dark Superman storyline from the comics; Actor Michael B. Jordan once tried to bring this character to the big screen in 2018.
“Ta-Nehisi Coates Between the world and me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world, ”said Toby Emmerich, President of Warner Bros. Pictures, in a press release. “We are confident that his portrayal of Superman will offer fans a new and exciting way of seeing the Man of Steel.”
