INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) – The fall harvest is a stressful time for many farmers as they face the uncertainty of weather conditions, equipment failures and market fluctuations. Indiana State Department of Agriculture Received $ 500,000 Grant from United States Department of Agriculture to Help Indiana Farmers Facing Stress and Mental Health Issues . ISDA is partnering with the Indiana Rural Health Association and Purdue Extension to reduce mental health stigma and connect people with support.

Organizations will run workshops statewide to help people who live and work in agriculture learn about mental health care options.

“Farming is one of the most dangerous and stressful jobs around,” said Bruce Kettler, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. “Every person faces stressors in their work and in their life, and rural communities are no different. I hope this project will highlight the resources for their stress and any mental difficulties they may be facing.

As part of the campaign, Purdue Extension will study and analyze the landscape and capacity of mental health call centers in Indiana. The extension will use the information to develop a specialized training module for call center workers to better understand the challenges for farmers, farm families and agribusinesses.

“COVID, disrupted agricultural supply chains, price volatility and varying weather conditions are just a few of the issues that have intensified the need for stronger supports for our farmers and agribusiness colleagues in times of crisis. stress, ”said Jason Henderson, principal of Purdue Extension.

Partners say the initiative will increase awareness of existing mental health resources, build knowledge about agriculture, and help Hoosiers reduce stigma and better recognize mental health needs.
