The “Taika Waititi Star wars movie “has been one of those concepts floating around in the pop culture ecosystem for a few years now, a ball of hypothetical potential that may or may not end up paying off in a real, visible movie.. It started a long time ago (i.e. 2017), when LucasFKathleen Kennedy of ilm expressed her hope for the Wild hunt director to lend his talents to this galaxy so long ago and so far. It has evolved since then, however, thanks to Waititi’s increasingly strong links with Disney through its Thor movies (and now her co-starring role in free guy), and his staging, and his dubbing appearances in real Star wars project The Mandalorian. But while all of these signs point to the growing likelihood that Taika Waititi strength make a Star wars film at some point, very little remains real proof of the film never saw the light of day.
All this brings us to a Wired interview Waititi gave this week, attached to free guy, in which he confirmed that… well, yes, not much has happened overall “Star wars movie “thing.” It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ scene, “he joked in the interview, which is another blank slate where a screenplay might one day go. being said, Waititi asserted that “We have a story. I’m really excited about it because it feels so good to me.
Which is interesting to hear, given that Star wars, like a movie franchise, is still recovering from a few previous projects where distinctive creators have attempted to adapt their styles to the existing franchise, most notably with the eventual sacking of Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Disney has been at least somewhat willing to welcome more distinctive voices in its various Star wars parallel projects—we are still really excited for this next one anime anthology-but less when it comes to movies.
Meanwhile, it’s not like Waititi hurts at work: he’s already done filming the next one. Thor: love and thunder, and is still determined to try to get this live action Akira soil film.
