Writer and director Taika Waititi is one of the many big names in James gunn‘s The suicide squad. While we know Waititi had been in the movie for quite some time, we didn’t know what role he was playing exactly.
Those who have seen the film are now familiar with the small but heartfelt role that Waititi plays. It turns out, however, that Gunn had another potential role in mind for his fellow MCU director. Read on to find out more, and disclaimer – there will be minor spoilers in advance for The suicide squad.
Taika Waititi, the best dad
In the current film, Waititi plays the late father of Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior). We see him in flashbacks his daughter remembers – where they both lived on the streets. Through these flashbacks we get the origin story of Ratcatcher II – his father (Waititi) created the device that allowed him and her to control millions of tiny furry creatures, including the dapper Sebastian.
More importantly, Waititi’s heartfelt scenes with Mechior also allow us to understand why Ratcatcher II is the least emotionally disturbed of all in Task Force X – she had a good father.
While Waititi as the Ratcatcher was a small but poignant role in a film full of violent and spectacular deaths, Gunn initially had a larger role in mind for the writer-director. However, scheduling conflicts stood in the way.
In an interview with IndieWire, Gunn explains what happened:
“I actually thought of Taika for another role and offered it to him and he said, I don’t know…. ‘ He was working on ‘Akira’ at the time, and he said, ‘I had to give you my answer in about two weeks’, he totally wanted to do it. He was one of the other superheroes. And he has said he wanted to do it and then “Akira” was given the green light and it was happening. “
Gunn declined to say which particular superhero he had in mind for Waititi. He admitted, however, that he was one of the characters who introduced himself at the start of the film, most of whom were murdered.
Which member of Task Force X could it be?
Which character can it be? I doubt it is Weasel (Sean gunn), King Shark (Steve Agee / Sylvester Stallone) or Michael Rooker ‘the character of Fabio (AKA Savant), while Gunn regularly casts Rooker, Agee and his brother in his films. It probably wasn’t Captain Boomerang either (Jai courtney), as Courtney was reprising her role as David yesterday‘s Suicide Squad movie. Mongolian (Mayling Ng) is a female character from the comics, so she’s unlikely too.
This still leaves several options. TDK? Javelin? Scoundrel? The polka-dot man, even? It’s hard to imagine which one, because all the actors play their roles wonderfully.
Waititi finally made her way into the film when Warner Bros. stopped working on Akira. “[Taika] wrote to me and he said, ‘Oh, [the] fucking movie collapsed. Is this role still available? Gunn told IndieWire. “And I said, ‘No, but let me get you into something else. “”
That Something Else is the best dad, a character who gives a whimsical warmth to the entire production. So while it wasn’t Gunn’s initial choice, it’s arguably a better choice.
The suicide squad is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
