Take a look at the world's most expensive SUV: the Karlmann King

If you plan to spend $ 1.9 million on a new vehicle, an Italian armored car based on a Ford F-550 chassis is probably not on your radar. Karlmann is trying to change that.

The company operates out of Los Angeles, has a factory in Italy and is largely funded by Beijing's International Automotive Technologies. Its first product, the Karlmann King, is a huge rolling lounge with recliners, a coffee maker, champagne flutes, a wide-screen TV and an affordable price that makes it the world's most expensive SUV .

In addition to the stratospheric starting price, buyers can customize the king as they please. Alligator skin seats, genuine gold trim and special upholstery are all available for a price. Michael Nothdurft, sales manager for Karlman, said that a customer in Africa had ordered a Karlman King for $ 3.5 million.

Much of this extra cost: bulletproof protection. Most King buyers opt for the bullet-resistant option, which adds at least $ 300,000 to the price, depending on the level of protection desired by customers.

Buyers of these armored monster trucks range from customers in the Middle East and Africa's dangerous regions to real estate nabobs and expensive watch dealers in the United States. But for less security-conscious buyers, Nothdurft points out that the king is meant to be a continuous work of art.

It is undeniably different from anything you will see on American roads. It has an extremely angular style and is absolutely huge.

"This car is the most emotional car you can see in auto shows," Nothdurft told CNBC. "People hate him or they like him."

The King is based on a Ford F-550 chassis. The F-550 is a massive truck chassis that, according to Nothdurft, was chosen for its proven durability and ability to support the weight of a luxury armored vehicle. The King maintains the 6.8-liter V-10, suspension components and F-550 transmission and is therefore limited to 87 mph. The interior, however, is tailor-made.

Karlman plans to build a manufacturing line in the United States in the coming months, but for now, the King is hand-made in Italy. For cars in the US market, the armor is installed in the United States.

The company currently has 20 buyers lined up in North America, Nothdurft said.

Buyers who order a king today should expect a delivery within nine to fifteen months.
