After the Mets took a 7-1 lead and a Jeurys Familia relief exit put this advance in danger they hung – with Seth Lugo throw two scoreless innings and Justin Wilson closing the door in ninth place – New York beating the Nationals, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. >> Scored points
Five takeaways from Wednesday's match
1) After losing 1-0, the Mets tied the game on a score of Juan Lagares Homer solo in the center of the field in the top of the third. In the fourth inning, Robinson Cano lifted a two-point shot to the left field to put the Mets, 3-1, and Pete Alonso crashed a solo shot to the left of the field in the fifth inning (his 45th best leader of the season) to extend the lead. The Mets added three more points in the sixth on a single two-point Amed Rosario and a striking goal hitting the stick of Jeff McNeil.
2) Cano was in training for the first time since returning from the opposing squad and he had a huge game, scoring 3 on 3 with the above-mentioned circuit, two points scored, two runs produced and one run. Cano also looked good on the basics, showing no signs of hamstring slowing or even first to third on a single.
3) Zack Wheeler Curved but not broken during the five rounds of the fifth inning, constantly worked in difficult situations while performing 101 throws and allowing one run on seven hits while walking two and hitting three. After giving a run to the second run, Wheeler got rid of a bottleneck loaded in bases by getting Anthony Rendon steal. The easiest round of Wheeler was the fifth when he retired. Juan Soto, Ryan Zimmerman, and Kurt Suzuki with ease.
4) It was a curious gesture for Mickey Callaway Eliminate Wheeler at 101 runs before the sixth inning after Wheeler had a fifth save. But Wheeler was removed and replaced by Jeurys Familia, who walked two batters to set up a bad exit where he gave up three points while trying to protect a 7-1 lead. Luis Avilan came to replace Familia and brought out Soto to limit the damage.
5) Alonso (45th) was ahead of Cody Bellinger and Mike Trout as leader of the major league.
