Last year, Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry made several attempts to acquire defensive end Takk McKinley, but was unable to do so. Instead, the Browns signed McKinley quickly this offseason.
At the time, McKinley was considered the team’s top passer opposite Myles Garrett. The team added Jadeveon Clowney later in the offseason to create a solid rotation.
McKinley left training on July 30 due to illness and has not returned to training since. Little is known about the nature of his illness, but updates indicated his return shortly.
Until Saturday, when head coach Kevin Stefanski’s schedule changed:
#Brown HC Kevin Stefanski has said ED Takk McKinley remains out of the squad for personal reasons and Stefanski has no date he expects him to return. Stefanski has said he hopes McKinley will return in time for the start of the season.

That the coach “hopes” the defensive end will return in time for the start of the season does not mean he would be ready to return to the field by Week 1. Instead, Cleveland will plan to start. the season with Garrett, Clowney, Porter Gustin, Curtis Weaver and, possibly, Joe Jackson in the position.
It is not known whether McKinley’s continued absence for personal reasons is related to his illness or if the two issues overlap. McKinley is no longer on social media for the moment.
