The Taliban say they destroyed an ISIS-K cell responsible for a deadly bombing of a mosque in the Afghan capital over the weekend.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement that the group carried out a counterattack on the cell on Sunday evening, according to Reuters.

“The ISIS base was completely destroyed and all ISIS operatives inside were killed as a result of this decisive and successful attack,” he said.

The bombing earlier on Sunday occurred during a memorial service for Mujahid’s mother and is believed to have killed at least two people and injured several others outside the Eid Gah mosque in Kabul.

It was the first major attack in the Afghan capital since a suicide bombing killed 13 US servicemen and dozens of Afghans outside the city’s airport as US forces evacuated personnel and the allies of the war-torn country in late August.

ISIS-K claimed responsibility for Sunday’s bombing, in which no Taliban fighters were killed, the group told the Washington Post.

Following the withdrawal of US troops from the country, the Taliban took full control of Afghanistan.
