Taliban order Kabul women to leave the workforce

TThe Taliban ordered women in Kabul to leave the labor market on Sunday, telling them to stay home pending a further decision.

Kabul’s acting mayor, Hamdullah Namony, made the announcement at his first press conference since the Taliban appointed him. Namony said women in Kabul should stay at home regardless of their employment status. There will be exceptions for women who cannot be replaced by men, including some in design and engineering departments and female public washroom attendants, according to the Associated Press.

“There are areas where men cannot do it, we have to ask our female staff to perform their duties, there is no alternative for that,” Namony said.

Prior to the Taliban takeover in August, Namony said nearly 3,000 of Kabul’s workers were women, or about a third of the city’s workforce, the Associated Press reported.

The Taliban also replaced a women’s ministry with “ministries of prayer and guidance and promotion of virtue and prevention of vice” in Kabul on Friday after weeks of ordaining women who had turned up. to work to go home.

Sayed Zekrullah Hashimi, spokesman for the Taliban, said in an interview on September 9 that women are unable to hold government office because it “would put something on her neck that she cannot wear.”

The Taliban’s suppression of women’s roles in the workforce comes after the Taliban overtook Afghanistan as the United States withdrew its forces from the country.

During the withdrawal, thousands of US residents were left behind, including a pregnant woman who was beaten by the Taliban. About 70% of Americans said they were “ashamed” of the handling of the withdrawal.
