Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski has fractured his ribs that threaten to sideline him for weeks, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Gronkowski did not travel with the Buccaneers to Foxborough, Mass., For Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots due to the effect the flight could have on his injury.

“We’ve been hopeful all week that Gronk will be ready,” a team source told ESPN. “It’s a different race.”

Gronkowski was injured in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but returned to finish the game. Initially, the Buccaneers and Gronkowski didn’t think the injury was as bad as it turned out to be, and Gronkowski’s rib x-rays taken after the game came back negative.

But other MRI tests during the week revealed fractures not found on x-rays, which do not show hair fractures.

Gronkowski did not train on Wednesday or Thursday and was only seen stretching during training on Friday. The Buccaneers had classified him as questionable on Friday before demoting him to Saturday.

After traveling to New England this weekend, the Buccaneers host Miami, play in Philadelphia on a Thursday night, then return home to Chicago before a road game in New Orleans and their leave on Nov. 7.
