ST. PETERSBURG, Fla – Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier is “shocked to see what happened” and finds the reaction “hard to believe” when he retrieved a dropped scout card of Toronto Blue Jays receiver Alejandro Kirk’s bracelet.
Kiermaier reiterated ahead of Wednesday’s series finale that he had no bad intentions. The speedster was called out sliding home in the sixth inning of the Rays’ 6-4 win on Monday night and saw a strip of paper lying next to him after the game. He casually picked it up and l ‘brought it back to the Tampa Bay shelter, where he quietly handed it over to Paul Hoover, the club’s field coordinator.
Kiermaier thought the map was his reconnaissance report.
“We are making it too complex,” Kiermaier said. “I saw a few words on it, knowing it wasn’t mine, I haven’t looked at it, I still haven’t looked at it. I don’t even know what’s on it.”
“A few seconds later I realized it wasn’t ours and at that point I don’t give it back,” Kiermaier added. “I’m not going to walk to the other canoe or find another way. They can think whatever they want out there, they are entitled to an opinion. I’m done with that, though.”
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash apologized to Blue Jays management ahead of Tuesday night’s game. Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said after the game the problem was “agua under the bridge”.
Kiermaier pointed out that his scout card came out as he slipped into second base in a recent game against Detroit and Tigers infielder Niko Goodrum tried to grab him. Kiermaier jokingly stepped on it and said “you can’t have it.”
When asked if he had done something wrong, Kiermaier replied: “No”.
“It’s easy to sit here after the fact knowing it’s their card, I get it,” Kiermaier said. “At that time I was running over 360 feet [trying to score on an infield hit and throwing error] and I’m sitting there trying to process the play, thinking my scout’s report is on the ground, grabbing it, just coming back trying to get over there on defense and catching my breath thinking it’s finished and finished. “
There was no incident in Tuesday’s game due to the situation.
