Tampa Bay Rays star outfielder Randy Arozarena has been arrested by Mexican police in Yucatan for allegedly attempting to abduct his daughter from her mother’s home and allegedly assaulted the woman’s father.

Local newspaper Yucatan Ahora was the first to report the incident, and the Tampa Bay Times confirmed it with Arozarena’s agent, Abel Guerra.

“The only thing I know is that he was hyper-sensitive to make sure the child’s needs were taken care of,” Guerra told the Tampa Bay Times. “He always sent money there, and he was very involved in his life. I don’t want to speculate on (something else). “

Guerra said he had not spoken to Arozarena, and he called it a “horrible and unfortunate situation”. Arozarena has not yet been charged. Mexican law gives prosecutors two days to decide whether or not to lay charges. Normally, suspects are held in custody pending this decision.

Major League Baseball will investigate the situation, according to ESPN. The joint MLB and MLBPA domestic violence policy would dictate any punishment Arozarena may receive since the incident allegedly involved at least one family member.

Arozarena, winner of the Babe Ruth award for playoff MVP, hit 0.377 with 10 homers and 14 RBIs in 20 playoff games for the Rays, which fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
