NEW YORK (AP) – Tanya Roberts, who captivated James Bond in ‘A View to a Kill’ and appeared on the ‘That’ 70s Show ‘sitcom, has died hours after being mistakenly pronounced dead by her publicist and his partner. She was 65.
Lance O’Brien, his nearly two-decade companion, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center contacted him at 9:30 p.m. PST on Monday to inform him that Roberts had passed away.
“She was my soul mate, she was my best friend. We haven’t been separated for two days, ”in their years together, O’Brien said in tears.
Roberts’ death was linked to a urinary tract infection, reporter Mike Pingel said. He was at the hospital Tuesday morning with O’Brien to collect Roberts’ personal effects.
Roberts collapsed at the home on December 24 after promoting her dogs and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai. She was reported dead on Sunday, but Pingel said this was based on a mistake by O’Brien, who believed Roberts escaped on what was to be a final visit.
Numerous media outlets, including the Associated Press, reported Roberts’ death on Monday, based on information Pingel received from O’Brien.
O’Brien, who had been unable to see Roberts in hospital due to COVID-19 restrictions, was allowed to surrender on Sunday as his condition worsened. The actor did not have the virus, he said.
When he got the call on Sunday that she was failing, O’Brien said he was “emotionally shocked because I expected her to come home.”
Roberts played geologist Stacey Sutton opposite Roger Moore in 1985’s “A View of a Murder”, where she held a gun at Bond after deceiving him into believing she was in a shower. The character later joined him to stop the bad guys on an airship over San Francisco.
Roberts has also appeared in fantasy adventure films like “The Beastmaster” and “Hearts and Armor”. She replaced Shelley Hack in “Charlie’s Angels”, joining Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd as third Angel Julie. She also played the comic book heroine Sheena – a female version of the Tarzan story – in a 1984 film.
A new generation of fans saw her on “That ’70s Show” from 1998-2004, playing Midge, the mother of Laura Prepon’s character, Donna.
Roberts, a leading animal rights activist, is survived by O’Brien.
