PRESS ROOM (ADV) – Six Al Shabab militants were killed and several others wounded in separate incidents in the Hiraan region of central Somalia during a clash between the Somali National Army (SNA) ) and activists, officials said Wednesday.

Abdirahim Takow, deputy governor for security affairs in the Hiraan region, told reporters that four of the militants were killed on Wednesday morning and two others died in the blast of an antipersonnel mine that they were planting at the airport of Bula-Burte, a city in the region.

"Six Al-Shabab militants were killed in two separate incidents here in the Hiraan region. SNA soldiers killed four Al-Shabab militants in an area about 80 km from the town of Beletweyne, and the other two died in a land mine-related blast at night in the town of Beletweyne. Bula-Burte airport, in the same region, "said Takow.

He added that a African Union soldier belonging to a Djiboutian contingent had been killed in a bomb blast inside the airport on Tuesday.

The militants claimed responsibility for the killing of the AU soldier and the wounded Tuesday of the Djiboutian contingent, but did not comment on Wednesday's clashes with SNA forces.

The terrorist group has intensified its attacks in central Somalia after being driven out of the capital, Mogadishu.
