MUCH, July 9 (KUNA) – Rauf Abu Zaki, executive director of the Lebanese economic and trade group that is organizing the Arab Economic Forum, said Monday that the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait, Marzouq Al-Ghanim , would be the first head of parliament to attend the forum as a guest.
In the past, Abu Zaki told KUNA that the forum, which hosted the heads of government of the countries of the region, decided to invite Al-Ghanim this year because of its leading role at the Arab level and strong relations between Lebanon and Kuwait.
"Al-Ghanim is a dynamic person who plays a major role as president of the National Assembly in Kuwait and a prominent figure at the Arab and regional levels," he said.
Abu Zaki said the forum would focus on political and economic developments in the region, and bring together policymakers, business people and investors.
He added that Kuwait and Lebanon had deep relations and that the Gulf country was the first country to invest in Lebanon. He noted that these relationships and investments were not affected by political and security uncertainties.
The Kuwaiti people have always visited Lebanon and maintained their investments, said Abu Zaki, who estimated Kuwaiti investment at more than $ 2 billion.
Abu Zaki spoke of Lebanon's economic and financial situation, describing it as "difficult" because of declining remittances from the Gulf and African countries.
He said that the movement of goods with neighboring Syria has also decreased following the eruption of the conflict, so the transport of goods to the Gulf countries has stopped.
The economic crisis in Lebanon, he explained, caused a rise in unemployment and affected the middle class.
The Arab Economic Forum will be held under the auspices of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. (end) ff.bs
