Tanzanian President John Magufuli who was criticized for his authoritarian leadership style promised that his ruling party would be "in power to always".

In a speech broadcast on radio and television Monday night, Magufuli said that opponents of his party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) "would still have problems."

His speech is the latest in a series of controversial comments that included a suggestion over the weekend that prisoners be forced to work "day and night" and receive kicking if they are lazy.

"The CCM is here and will continue to be here – forever, CCM members, you can walk with your head up, there is no alternative to the CCM," Magafuli said. A new training center for parties is being built in Kibaha, outside the economic capital Dar es Salaam.

The $ 45 million (38.4 million euros) facility is funded by a donation from China and will be dedicated to Julius Nyerere, the founding father of modern Tanzania and founder of the CCM.

Magufuli, who came to power in 2015, has already irritated rights groups with his campaigns against homosexuality and calls for banning pregnant girls in schools.
