A pair of documents covering Apple's service policies and procedures contradict the reasoning of a silicone seal around the key mechanisms of the new 2018 MacBook Pro.
Apple service providers receive details on how to handle repairs on a new product at about the same time as the product versions. A version of this document was quoted by the French site MacGeneration on Thursday morning, with this version of July 14, and perhaps earlier, saying that the seal will also act to reduce dust and debris in the mechanism.
MacGeneration has no country of origin in its version of the documentation, but after talking to the publication, we believe that the information provided comes from a legitimate source .

AppleInsider has access to the same documentation in the United States. Even after three revisions since the publication, the American documentation never claimed that the seal would prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism, but retains the same language regarding the replacement technique of the bar. 39, space, as well as the rest of the captured document
The marketing copy of Apple has always maintained that the new keyboard is quieter and did not say anything to improve reliability.
There have been several instances where the keyhole mechanism caused keyboard problems for 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro, as well as the MacBook, including repeated characters, keys that do not respond, and 39, other similar problems. The problems prompted Apple to launch a keyboard service program for the problem, with affected users able to receive a free service on their laptops.
The new keyboard is presented as being quieter when typing, probably due to the addition of a silicone membrane surrounding each butterfly mechanism. It is plausible that the membrane can prevent dust and debris from interfering with the mechanism, the lower volume potentially being a side effect of its inclusion.
The membrane is not a perfect seal, however. There are gaps to allow the keycap to connect to the keyboard, and a larger one in the center of the cap.
The MacBook Pro 2018 keyboard, claimed by Apple to be quieter than the second and second generation of butterfly switches used in the 2016 and 2017 versions of the MacBook Pro and MacBook, will not be offered to owners of earlier models. They are brought to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.
Confirmed by AppleInsider sources within Apple are not allowed to speak on behalf of the company, the old MacBook Pro will receive the same keyboard design that they already have, not the new version. At this time, only the 2018 MacBook Pro will receive the new design if maintenance is required.
