30-year prison term imposed on orchestra conductor who paid Kshs10's balance

Roman Oduor, a conductor, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for pushing a passenger off a treadmill over Kshs10.

According to the court records, Oduor reportedly refused to give Aziz Mahmoud, the deceased Kshs10, representing the balance of the price the passenger had paid.

The deceased boarded the Matatu from the Nairobi Exhibition Center to Makina Stadium.

The conductor would have received 100 Ksh and should make Ksh 90. but instead, he returned 80 Ksh and refused to add the rest.

A dispute ensued that pushed Oduor to push Aziz out of the vehicle and fall to his death.

The witnesses who testified in this case explained to the court how the team matatu had run away after committing the act, another team taking over the vehicle.

"The quarrel was between the conductor and the matatu on whether the tariff was Sh10 or Sh20, "said the witness.

Oduor was serving a death sentence and had been incarcerated for 22 years but after the Supreme Court declarede unconstitutional penal codehe appealed his lawyer Steve Odumbe.

Matatu conductors are known for their aggression, rude behavior and lack of respect towards their customers.

Fred Matiang'i, secretary of the Cabinet of the Interior, warned the public transport sector and promised to put an end to anarchy.

"We are dealing with an area where people have actually decided to make the law themselves." This area of ​​public transportation has become a kind of monster, observed Matiang'i.
