Starting next month, motorists in Nairobi will benefit from lower parking fees after Governor Mike Sonko announced that he would bring back charges to Sh200.
Mr Sonko said that the county's treasury had already taken into account the reduction in fees, which the city council had proposed to raise to 400 shillings last month, in the 2018 finance bill presented to the government. Assembly.
"After consultations with various stakeholders, including neighborhood representatives, we agreed to reduce parking fees so as not to overload motorists," said the governor yesterday.
However, he indicated that his administration would review the fees in the future once the current projects are completed, in order to reduce congestion in the downtown core.
"I know this (reduced fees) will increase congestion in the city center but, again, we can not punish the Nairobi residents because projects such as the BRT and the construction of the terminus of Buses outside the CBD are still going on, "said the county chief.
At present, motorists are paying 300 shillings a day after parking fees have been increased by 140 shillings in 2013 by the administration of Evans Kidero.
