The mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts, will be out of sight and off the office for the next few weeks due to a serious case of shingles.

According to officials, Democratic mayor Joseph Curtatone has recently been hospitalized for the shingles virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Although the disease rarely endangers life, Curtatone's office said that he was suffering from a severe case that affects his inner ear and his facial nerves.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly one in three people will develop shingles at some point, and anyone who has been cured of chicken pox can still contract the disease.

Curtatone keeps in touch with his staff, and his office says he plans to work remotely in the next few days after his convalescence.
