Botswana has joined the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), becoming the continent's 38th country to join the instrument. The decision was made by President Mokgweetsi Masisi at the African Union High Level Dialogue held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Wednesday.
President Masisi announced that his country would join the APRM without delay.
Introduced in 2003, the APRM is a mutually agreed instrument to which member countries of the African Union have voluntarily committed themselves as a self-monitoring mechanism to encourage the respect of values, codes and norms of policy, Economy and corporate governance.
Among the 36 AU members who have signed the MoU establishing the APRM are Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal, Ethiopia, Algeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Malawi, Mauritius, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
Prior to Botswana, Gambia was its last member, after joining the APRM last January, marking a change from the policies of the past under Yahya Jammeh, when the country had neglected to join such a mechanism for more than a year. ten years.
Jammeh, who lost power in 2016, had ignored repeated calls to join the APRM, not considering it as a priority of his government.
