The Launceston Medical Center has launched a pioneering project to identify patients with atrial fibrillation (the most common arrhythmia in adults) – a condition that may go unnoticed but is more likely to have a stroke.
Dr. Amit Dhulkotia told the Patient Group at the Launceston Medical Center (PPG) on November 12 that the project had started six weeks earlier.
"We have already examined 130 patients and two have been identified as having atrial fibrillation. They are now being treated by the medical center, "said Dr. Amit.
"Although only a relatively small percentage of patients suffer from atrial fibrillation, the tests are simple and fast and, for those identified, this intervention could save lives."
Launceston with the Academic South West (ASWN) has put in place a system to set up a systematic patient screening system, which is fully in line with the NHS's focus on the prevention and early intervention.
There are two control units in the center, each consisting of two fingers and a mobile phone with a special program that captures the pulse waves.
Patients benefiting from their free NHS health check are an important target group for screening and Dr Amit urged all eligible to undergo it. This is for patients in 40-74 age groups (without pre-existing conditions).
The experiences and lessons learned from Launceston will be shared with other Cornwall law firms through their KCCG (Cardiovascular Group) group and Lily Hammarlund Sim (Pharmaceutical Consultant).

We all know how important it is to prevent health problems from developing and this early identification of potential stroke victims is an effective use of valuable resources – both medical and technological. "
