Zimbabweans protest "cocktail of lies" in the face of economic decline

HARARE, Zimbabwe – Zimbabweans are coming together for a national protest against the country's economic collapse and what the opposition calls the "cocktail of lies" of the new government.

The administration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa is under increasing pressure one year after taking office, following the sacking of Robert Mugabe, a long-time leader. Tensions remain high after the controversial July elections Mnangagwa has won.

The Zimbabwean government is struggling to put in place a reliable currency while many citizens in this southern African country say they have seen no progress on promises of "jobs, jobs, employment".

The capital, Harare, enjoys great security, opposition supporters singing anti-government songs.

The main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, said this week that he was ready to talk with Mnangagwa, a longtime Mugabe enforcement official. The ruling party has said that Chamisa should accept Mnangagwa's victory before negotiations begin.
