Dubai's Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation has taken the lead in creating the "Hopewells" endowment fund, which provides drinking water to more than 600,000 beneficiaries each year and implements sustainable water projects in drought-affected communities around the world.
The Foundation also registered a high number of employees participating in the contest.
There is no doubt that the "Highlights" initiative presented an inspiring humanitarian and social experience that highlighted the role of individuals and institutions in serving humanity and encouraged them to spread hope. .
Simple and sincere efforts have largely contributed to providing safe water to more than one million people living in less fortunate communities whose water resources are scarce in every corner of the world.
According to a new report from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, 297,000 children under five die from diarrhea related to lack of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Poor sanitation and contaminated water also help to transmit diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A and typhoid.
The report also highlights data showing that in 2017, three billion people did not have basic handwashing facilities with soap and water, which nearly three quarters of those belonging to the category of least developed countries.
UNICEF had previously conducted a study of 16 countries on the consequences of water supply on children caught in emergency situations, pointing out that the lack of safe water was much more lethal to children as war in more than a dozen countries affected by conflict.
