83-year-old woman hospitalized after convoy accident between William and Kate

An elderly woman is seriously ill at the hospital after a road accident involving the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge police escort.

Prince William and Kate traveled from London to Windsor when the 83-year-old woman was injured on Monday.

The accident involved a police motorcycle marked in the convoy and the police guardhouse is investigating.

The Kensington Palace said that the royal couple was "deeply concerned and saddened" and was in contact with the woman.

The woman – named Irene, according to the palace – was taken to hospital in critical condition as a result of the collision on Upper Richmond Road in Richmond, South West London. around 12:50 BST on June 17th.

She is now in a serious but stable condition at the hospital.

A spokesman for Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses have sent their best wishes to Irene and her family, and will keep in touch throughout her recovery."

According to the Press Association, the Duke and Duchess would have sent flowers to the woman.

Survey launched

The Independent Police Control Office (IOPC) said that it was investigating the circumstances of the collision after the Metropolitan Police reported it as "in accordance with the procedure".

"The investigation is still in its infancy and the agent involved is participating in our investigations as a witness.
