In an effort to boost regional integration and trade in East Africa, the African Development Bank Group has approved a US $ 322 million loan to Burundi and Tanzania, mainly for road rehabilitation. .
A major component of this project is paving a 260 km gravel road linking Kabingo, Kasulu and Manyovu in Tanzania.
The package also includes:
- A project to improve the 45 km road between Rumonge-Gitaza, south-west Burundi;
- Unique border post between Tanzania and Burundi at Manyovu / Mugina border;
- New health centers, schools and community water sources; and
- Rehabilitation of other rural and urban roads.
"The project will fundamentally improve the mobility of goods and services for Burundian and Tanzanian populations," said Gabriel Negatu, general manager of the Bank's regional development and business delivery office in Africa. Is.
"Improving transportation will bring additional benefits to both neighboring countries, including capacity building for women and youth for whom new markets will open and other economic activities will increase."
The projects aim to strengthen ties between the port of Dar es Salaam and markets in Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The road repairs are expected to be completed in 2023.
The project coincides with the bank's ten-year strategy, which extends from 2013 to 2022 and aims to "help regional member countries achieve more inclusive and greener growth" and "to integrate and improve Africa". the life of its inhabitants ".
